It can last for less than a week or become a chronic health problem. Insomnia affects approximately half of American adults at some point in their lives.

What causes insomnia?

Treating insomnia
Treatment for insomnia involves diagnosing and responding to any underlying medical or psychological problems that may be contributing to your poor sleep health. If that is the case insomnia may go away once the causes are dealt with. However, there are many cases in which other treatments are required. Those may include:

  • Insomnia medications
  • Behavioral techniques such as relaxation therapy and reconditioning, stimulus control, sleep hygiene, and cognitive therapy.
